We’re joined by Jan Lukas, co-host of the German podcast Kompendium des Unbehagens and Japanese expert.
This week we discuss one of his favourite Japanese films, Air Doll. You don’t have to watch the film to listen, but you should, it’s an interesting watch.
Here’s what I’ve got for you this week:
Here’s a fact I hope I don’t remember forever: some of the earliest sex dolls were created by Dutch sailors in the 17th century. A dame de voyage/dama de viaje would have been used during long voyages when the sailors were away for long periods of time. The dolls were sold (hopefully unused) to the Japanese, where the term “Dutch Wives” is still occasionally used.
Here is Jan Lukas’ list of his favourite films from his website. You can also check out his co-hosts’ lists and links to all of the trailers by going to their website:

Hirokazu Koreeda’s most recent film is After the Storm, a family drama which first premiered at last year’s Cannes Festival. The film, which is currently rated 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, tells the story of a man trying to reconnect with his estranged family during an oncoming typhoon.
South Korean actress Bae Doona, who plays Nozomi in Air Doll, has appeared in three Wachowski projects: the films Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending as well as the Netflix show Sense8.
That’s all for this week. Deeby’s back next week and I’m pitching, woo!
